book for LA826 auction sold to benefit education

Mark Moore Gallery held an auction this past weekend, and I was very honored to be invited by gallery director, Cat Moore to participate. I usually only donate my artwork to educational organizations. For the last several years I had donated something to Write Girl. They have programs that focus on writing for high school girls....so the LA826 "Spread the Word" auction was right in line with my donating principles.

For those of you not familiar, LA826 is one of many 826 across the nation that is the one of many brain-childs of the ubiquitous McSweeney's and other illustrious publications and writings of current importance, Dave Eggers.

The auction gleaned $6500!!! Amazing!! Congratulations to everyone. Including and perhaps a little bit especially to the person who bid on and won my book. Who are you? Thank You!!

The artists were sent pulp fiction paperbacks to change up for auction. And - something that I have never seen before, the gallery offered a tax-deductable donation form for artists valued at $100. (More galleries and organizations should consider this strategy when asking artists to donate work).

I browsed through the book for some interesting quotes that seemed relevant to me right now. Then I cut off the front and back covers and turned them inside out; collaged the selected texts on the front and back of the book...making it viewable from all sides, and by wrapping it, make all the other text secret.

"Death at Sea"
